Assam Police arrests BDF leader Pradip Dutta Roy

Guwahati: Controversial Barak Democratic Front (BDF) leader Pradip Dutta Roy has been arrested by the Cachar police after 8 hours of interrogation at the office of the Deputy Superintendent of Police.

He was summoned by the Cachar police for issuing an ultimatum of 48 hours to replace an Assamese hoarding with a Bengali one.

The development came after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a press conference claimed that the BDY leader Pradip Dutta Roy was taking him very lightly.

According to reports, Pradip Dutta Roy has been arrested against the Silchar Police Station case lodged by Hindu Yuva Parishad member Ranju Nath.

Roy has been booked under section 153/295A/295/124/506/505 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

It may be mentioned that the district administration of Cachar had put up a hoarding in the Assamese language at Meherpur on November 24, 2021.

Later, on November 25, 2021, Pradip Dutta Roy issued a 48-hour ultimatum to remove the hoarding.

Earlier, addressing the media here in Guwahati, CM Sarma said, “Even if we arrest him for smearing Assamese hoardings, it won’t make a strong case and therefore, we are waiting for the right time for action. A lot of research is ongoing on the matter and I want to assure you that this government is a very strong government. I want the Bengalis in Assam to understand that he is the person who is working against them.”

“Some vested interests are not toeing their agendas against the Assamese people. This is against the Bengalis in Brahmaputra valley. The person is well aware of the fact that there are around 20 lakh Bengalis in Brahmaputra valley, hence, if they commit anything dishonourable in Barak valley, it will impact in Brahmaputra valley immediately,” CM Sarma added.

Further, CM Sarma alleged that a political party trying to spread its tentacles in the state might be behind the developments. “This party wants to destabilize the situation and then encash from it. If we check Roy’s history we can track his contacts,” he added further.
