ULFA-I chief Paresh Baruah on Thursday made it clear that the “sovereignty” of Assam will “never be compromised” in the years to come.
Assam’s “sovereignty” is the core issue of the United Liberation Front of Asm-Independent (ULFA-I).
In a statement issued on Thursday, Paresh Baruah, the chairman of the Supreme Council, United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), said: “…historically Asom was never a part of India. Asom was a nation beaming with pride and sovereignty, which was later colonized by foreign invaders. This is a legitimate and a historically correct fact which needs to be brought into the limelight,”
“The 42 years old struggle for Independence is still continuing to restore Asom (Assam) to its former glory. In addition, the sovereignty of Asom will never be compromised in the year to come,” he asserted.
Baruah’s statement comes a day after Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reportedly said the peace process with the ULFA-I must be taken forward by striking the right balance between the outfit’s core demand and the ambit of the Constitution of India.
Regarding the statement of the Assam chief minister, the ULFA-I chief said: “I believe the CM of Asom (Assam) has the right to make public statements about the issues such as the sovereignty of Asom (Assam).”
“As the CM of Asom, he holds the responsibility and platform to speak the truth and oversee the well-being of the people of Asom. He has not made bold statements about other states, rather he is making statements about the state which is engraved in his title,” Baruah said.
