New fern species Selaginella bryopteris recorded in Arunachal Pradesh 1

A new species of fern, Selaginella bryopteris, was recorded in Arunachal Pradesh by a joint team of the forest department of Arunachal Pradesh and the Botanical Survey of India.

The new species of fern has been found near Kee river in Pistana circle of Lower Subansiri district.

Sharing the news, the divisional forest officer (DFO) of Ziro in Arunachal Pradesh, Abhinav Kumar tweeted on Saturday: “A new species of fern, Selaginella bryopteris, has been recorded from #ArunachalPradesh by our team.”

“The species has been found near Kee river in Pistana circle of Lower Subansiri district,” IFS officer Kumar informed.

Thanking the team of Botanical Survey of India, Kumar tweeted: “Thanks to the Botanical Survey of India team for the joint effort!”

Selaginella bryopteris (L.) Baker (Selaa new record to the fern allies and an overview of the genus Selaginella P.Beauv. (Selaginellaceae) for Arunachal Pradesh (India)

“Selagindla blyopieris (L) Baker (Selaginellaceae), which is also known as resurrecting herb or Sanjeebani Buti, a fern-ally, has been encountered from Lower Subansiri district, which is a new record from Arunachal Pradesh in the Northeast,” reads a study published by the East Himalayan Society for Spermatophyte Taxonomy.

The study was led by Asish Soni, Vineet K Rawat and Abhinav Kumar.

According to the study: “Till date, 23 species of Selaginella were found from this state except the newly reported taxon S. bryopteris (L) Baker.”

The presented gathering from Arunachal Pradesh shows its extended distribution to this state also.

“Taxonomic account, desiccated mounted specimens, distributional range, ecology, photographs and specimens examined of newly reported taxon have been provided with an emphasis on listing of genus Selaginella P. Beauv, including with habitat analysis for Arunachal Pradesh,” the study says.
