In a shocking incident, one domesticated elephant, two wild boars and a swamp deer were killed due to electrocution at the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) in Assam on Monday.
Sources said the 18-year-old domesticated male elephant, named Oiravat died after the metal chain tied around his front leg got stuck in an electric pole, which subsequently uprooted and fell on the animal, HT reported.
The incident took place at Hati Camp area under the Burapahar range of the national park.
Sources said two wild boars and a swamp deer died when the three animals came into contact with the live wire.
The incident has triggered a massive reaction and animal lovers have blamed the forest department for the tragic death of the animals.
“The tragic incident took place due to the irresponsibility of forest officials of the park. Why the elephant was allowed to roam in the area with forest staff. Why the elephant’s movement was not monitored properly,” asked a wildlife activist.
Locals have demanded immediate removal of the high-tension power lines passing through the national park.
