The Sikkim government is all set to ban sale and distribution of packaged mineral drinking water in the state.
This was announced by Sikkim chief minister PS Tamang in Gangtok on Saturday.
There will be a complete ban on packaged mineral drinking water in the Himalayan state from January 1.
The Sikkim chief minister said that as the state is already blessed with natural fresh water resources, so there is no need for packaged mineral water.
“Sikkim is already blessed with natural fresh water resources, so people in the state would have to do away with mineral water bottles,” CM PS Tamang said.
He added: “Sikkim can meet its water requirements by itself through environment-friendly initiatives.”
Sikkim CM PS Tamang made this announcement during his address on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on Saturday in Gangtok.
Notably, several tourist destinations in Sikkim have already banned plastic water bottles.
