Amid the decline in COVID-19 cases across the country, the number of coronavirus cases has recording a steady increase among children below 10 years,  according to data available with the Empowered Group-1 (EG-1). It is to be noted that EG-1 is tasked with formulating the Covid emergency strategy of the country.

According to the data, the share of children in the total active Covid-19 cases has jumped from 2.80% in March this year to 7.04% in August. This means that about of every 100 active Covid cases, around seven are of children.

Experts, however, said that it would not be correct to term the “marginal shift” towards children as “dramatic” as the number of COVID-19 cases in children could be rising due to reduced vulnerability of adults to the virus.

The data was presented at a meeting of the EG-1 — headed by NITI Aayog member V K Paul — that had officials from different ministries in attendance, including the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Out of 18 states and Union Territories, in August, Covid-19 cases among children were the highest in Mizoram (16.48% of total active cases) and the lowest in Delhi (2.25%). Eight states — Mizoram (16.48%), Meghalaya (9.35%), Manipur (8.74%), Kerala (8.62%), Andaman and Nicobar Islands (8.2%), Sikkim (8.02%), Dadra and Nagar Haveli (7.69%) and Arunachal Pradesh (7.38%) — recorded a higher proportion of COVID-19 children than the national average of 7.04%.

The states where a lower proportion of COVID-19 was recorded than the national average for August were Puducherry (6.95%), Goa (6.86%), Nagaland (5.48%), Assam (5.04%), Karnataka (4.59%), Andhra Pradesh (4.53%), Odisha (4.18%), Maharashtra (4.08%), Tripura (3.54%) and Delhi (2.25%).

“The proportion of children getting admitted is higher than before. It is mainly because of two reasons. First, there is more awareness and alertness; second, vulnerability might have also increased proportionately,” a quote told Indian Express.

Maharashtra Energy Minister Nitin Raut on Monday (September 6) said that third wave of COVID-19 has arrived in Nagpur and the government will soon announce fresh restrictions in order to curb the spread of the deadly virus in the city.

Minister Raut made the statement after holding a review meeting with senior administrative officers from various state departments. Talking to reporters, Raut said that third wave, which is expected to hit India anytime in September-October, has reached Nagpur as the number of coronavirus cases in the city has increased.

Raut said that the daily addition of COVID-19 cases was in single digits till a couple of days ago, but on Monday 12 cases were recorded in Nagpur. He said 78 samples have been sent for genome sequencing.

Meanwhile, India reported 31,222 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours taking the total tally to over 3.30 crore, the Heath Ministry data revealed. Out of these, 3.92 are active cases while 3.22 crore people have recovered after testing positive. 290 new deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours taking the total death toll to 4.41 lakh.

Kerala recorded 19,688 new COVID-19 cases and 135 deaths in the last 24 hours. Single-day recoveries outnumbered new COVID-19 cases in Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday as 124 people recuperated from the disease while 70 more tested positive for the infection, a health department official said.

Kerala is currently battling a spike in COVID-19 cases and the sudden outbreak of the Nipah virus. The coronavirus and Nipah virus may appear to be similar in nature but it is to be noted that these viruses are quite different.

Nipah is a zoonotic infection

According to experts, the Nipah virus is a zoonotic infection (an infectious disease that is transmitted between species, from animals to humans or vice versa). The virus was isolated and identified in 1999 and is named after a village in Malaysia, Sungai Nipah.

In Nipah virus, the host can be a pig, a fruit bat, dogs, goats, cats, horses and possibly sheep, too. It is believed that the virus is maintained in nature by “flying foxes” (a type of fruit bat).

But the origins of coronavirus are yet to be known.

Both Nipah and COVID-19 have no cure

Notably, both infections have no cure. “Currently, there are no licensed treatments available for Nipah virus (NiV) infection. Treatment is limited to supportive care, including rest, hydration, and treatment of symptoms as they occur,” said the Centre for Disease Control.

The CDC added that there are “immunotherapeutic treatments (monoclonal antibody therapies) that are currently under development and evaluation for the treatment of NiV infections”.

Nipah more lethal but less infectious

According to the Global Virus network, the R0 (R naught) of the Nipah virus was estimated to be 0.43. The fatality rate is 45 per cent to 70 per cent.

But Covid’s R0 fluctuates heavily and has been above the 1 per cent mark several times in India and outside. This is why it is transmitted so easily.

The threat

Nipah virus outbreaks are recorded in Malaysia, Singapore, Bangladesh and India. The virus has also been found affecting bats in countries, including Cambodia, Indonesia, Madagascar, Thailand and Timor-Leste.

On the other hand, coronavirus cases have been reported in 221 countries and territories around the world.

Symptoms

The symptoms of coronavirus include fever, dry cough, tiredness, aches and pains, loss of smell and so on.

WHO says, “For Covid-19, data to date suggest that 80 per cent of infections are mild or asymptomatic, 15 per cent are severe infections, requiring oxygen and 5 per cent are critical infections, requiring ventilation. These fractions of severe and critical infection would be higher than what is observed for influenza infection.”

Nipah virus infection in humans causes a range of clinical presentations. Infected people initially develop fever, headaches, myalgia (muscle pain), vomiting and sore throat. This can be followed by dizziness, drowsiness, altered consciousness, and neurological signs that indicate acute encephalitis.

India’s coronavirus death toll crossed China’s on Friday, with 175 new fatalities in 24 hours taking the total to 4,706, according to official data.
India, home to some of the world’s most packed cities and a creaking healthcare system, is emerging as a new hotspot with record jumps in new cases in recent days.

Figures from India’s health ministry showed 165,799 infections, with western Maharashtra state — home to the finance hub of Mumbai — accounting for 36 percent of cases and 42 percent of deaths. China, where the deadly virus emerged late last year, reported no new deaths or new suspected cases on Friday, with the toll still at 4,634 and a total of 82,995 infections. Even though the number of cases is surging, India has steadily loosened its lockdown to lessen the massive impact on the economy — and the country’s poor who have been the hardest hit.

Home Minister Amit Shah was also  to hold talks with state chief ministers to discuss a further relaxing of restrictions, press reports said. The pandemic has killed 357,311 people worldwide, with US recording more than 100,000 fatalities.
